Disney+ beats analysts’ expectations, ad-supported tier coming this December

During The Walt Disney Company’s Q3 FY22, the company reported strong subscriber growth for the Disney+ streaming service. The company reported the addition of 14.4 million Disney+ subscribers bringing the total number of subscriptions to 221 million total subscriptions across their streaming offerings.

Disney has also stated starting on December 8 they will add an ad-supported tier to Disney+. The company will an ad-based level for $7.99 per month while continuing to offer an ad-free tier for $10.99 per month.

According to Deadline, “Walt Disney’s total DTC subscribers all in totaled 221.1 million for the company’s fiscal third quarter ended in June … Netflix reported 220.67 million total global subs, after losing almost 1 million for the three months.” This is the first time any streaming company has passed Netflix in total subscriptions.

Disney’s numbers include Disney+ (152M), ESPN+ (22.8M), and Hulu total, including Live TV, at (46.2M).

At this time, Disney offers an ad-supported bundle of Disney+ and Hulu for $9.99 per month, and $12.99 per month with ad-supported ESPN+. Deadline also reports that Hulu + Live TV (including Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ as part of a subscription since December), will introduce a new basic (with ads) plan for $69.99 a month.
