“Spirit of Aloha” show closes permanently to make room for new Polynesian DVC resort

After its four month closure in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Walt Disney World has brought back virtually every restaurant, resort, attraction, and live entertainment to the resort. They have yet to announce the return of a few guest favorites like the “Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue” at Fort Wilderness, but one dinner show that will not be returning is the “Spirit of Aloha” dinner show at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

Prior to the pandemic, it was rumored that the show was going to be closed for a variety of reasons. Between the first and second coronavirus wave and Disney’s phased reopening, some bloggers reported that the show was not returning due to low profit margins. Apparently, they must have had exclusive access to Disney’s financials.

Today, Disney did confirm that the “Spirit of Aloha” show would indeed not be returning to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, however, the reason is that they are planning on building a multi-level Disney Vacation Club (DVC) wing in its place.

“It’s no secret that our Members and Guests love the monorail resorts at Walt Disney World,” said Bill Diercksen, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Vacation Club. “Expanding our Disney Vacation Club offerings at the Polynesian would give our Members and Guests yet another incredible option for staying close to the magic while making vacation memories that last a lifetime.”

According to the press release, “Inspired by the early concepts for Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, the Imagineers of today are honoring the past while furthering the resort story with this innovative addition. Projected to open in late 2024, the proposed vacation ownership property would complement the existing resort and evoke the spirit of the Pacific Islands.”

Although there have been no additional details released, from the artist’s concept drawing it appears the new wing will feature an infinity edge pool. Additionally, it will be situated between the shores of Seven Seas Lagoon and the resort loop monorail. Along with Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Grand Floridan Resort & Spa, the proposed property will offer stunning views of the Magic Kingdom. Proposed plans would offer additional rooms, new recreation offerings, and dining options. More information and project details will be shared at a later date.
