Opinion: Disneyland Forward – expanding DCA & the future of the Paradise Pier Hotel

This past March Disney announced plans for a significant expansion of the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. The plans, which were initially approved in the 1990s, are known as Disneyland Forward.

“Thinking big and leading the way is both our legacy and our best path forward,” said Ken Potrock, President, Disneyland Resort. “Now is the time to be bold, to dream, to believe, and to lead! The world-renowned Disneyland Resort is poised to bring back jobs to our community as well as new entertainment and experiences to loyal fans and new audiences for generations to come.”

Potrock went on to say “we just need more flexibility” before this project can move forward. Disneyland would like to expand both park’s footprints into the area where the Disney Paradise Pier and Disneyland Hotel currently reside.

According to the DisneylandForward prospectus, “… while those plans resulted in major improvements to the entire Anaheim Resort, their ‘traditional’ district/zone approach does not allow for the diverse, integrated experiences theme park visitors now seek, severely limiting Disney’s ability to continue investing in Anaheim.”

Disney has now put the ball squarely in the court of the City of Anaheim. If the city approves the changes it appears the much needed expansion would move forward.
