California to End Face Mask Requirements Starting 15 June

Earlier this week the State of California updated some of their COVID-19 guidance, following previously released recommendations from the Center of Disease Control (CDC). Starting 15 June 2021, fully vaccinated individuals are not required to wear face coverings when outdoors except when attending crowded outdoor events, such as live performances, parades, fairs, festivals, sports events, or other similar settings.

Unvaccinated individuals are still required to wear a face covering outdoors any time physical distancing cannot be maintained. At this time, the State is still requiring all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, in all indoor locations, modes of transportation, transportation hubs, K-12 schools, childcare facilities, healthcare settings, long-term care facilities, state and local correctional facilities and detention centers, homeless shelters, emergency shelters, and cooling centers.

Additionally, masks are required for unvaccinated individuals in indoor public settings and businesses (examples: retail, restaurants, theaters, family entertainment centers, meetings, state and local government offices serving the public).

The guidelines do not off any guidance regarding theme parks. At this time, Disneyland still requires all guests, ages 2 and up, to wear an appropriate face covering when visiting the resort. Even though Disneyland is still limited capacity, theme parks could be interpreted as a “crowded outdoor event.”

“Face coverings are required for all Guests (ages 2 and older) and Cast Members, including those who have received a COVID-19 vaccine,” read a statement on the Disneyland website. “Please bring your own face coverings and wear them at all times, except when dining or swimming, and remember to not touch your face. You may remove your face covering while actively eating or drinking, but you must be stationary and maintain appropriate physical distancing. Eating and drinking are permitted only in designated dining areas, and are not permitted while queuing or in attractions. Disney reserves the right to require a Guest to leave if they are not properly wearing an approved face covering.”

The same day as the State’s new changes go into effect, Disneyland will lift the restriction only allowing in-state residents to visit the resort. It is unclear if Disney will adjust their policies at this time.
