Opinion: How Mickey’s Toontown will become more immersive

During the Disney Parks & Resorts presentation at the 2017 D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Disney announced the first attraction dedicated to Mickey Mouse, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, would be coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort.

The attraction, which replaced The Great Movie Ride, opened to guests on 4 March 2020, shortly before the entire resort closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In April 2019, the Disney Parks Blog announced the attraction will also be added to the Disneyland Park. “We have an exciting announcement to share! Disneyland park guests will be able to step into a cartoon world and join Mickey and his friends on Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, coming to Mickey’s Toontown in 2022,” stated Michael Ramirez, Public Relations Director, Disneyland Resort.

However, due to the park being closed for over a year, the attraction’s opening date has been pushed back by a year. In the meantime, the construction of the attraction has been moving along. Guests now visiting the recently opened Disneyland will be greeted by a massive show building rising from behind Toontown.

Last week, in advance of the park’s reopening, Disney installed a giant billboard in keeping with the feel of Toontown. The billboard read, “What Big Building? There’s NO Big Building Here!”

Disney Matter’s vlogger, OrangeGrove55, discusses how this giant show building will help the area become even more immersive than before.
