Disneyland to reopen in late April, states Disney CEO Bob Chapek

After being closed for a year, Disneyland, in Anaheim, California, will reopen in late April.

During Disney’s Annual Shareholder Meeting this week, Bob Chapek, CEO, The Walt Disney Company, made the announcement. However, he did not give an exact date. At the time, Chapek stated they would need time to ramp up operations including recalling and retraining them “to be able to operate according to the State of California’s new requirements.”

The announcement was made possible because California officials announced late last week that theme parks could reopen on April 1, as long as the county they reside in is not in the purple or widespread tier.

At this time, Orange County, where Disneyland is located, is currently in the purple tier, however it is expected the county would be at least in the red tier (substantial) if not in the orange tier (moderate) risk category.

The state says if a county is in the red tier then theme parks may open at a 15% capacity and at 25% capacity in the orange tier and 35% in the yellow or minimal tier.

According to The New York Times, last year The Walt Disney Company stated that reopening a park at less than 25% capacity does not make economic sense.

Much to the disappointment of Disneyland fans, the highly anticipated Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure will not open when the two parks reopen in April. Chapek stated the Marvel-themed area will open later in 2021.
