New Annual Passes at Walt Disney World remain unavailable for sale

Ever since Walt Disney World began its phased reopening of its theme parks last July, some of the many policies they put in place was limiting park capacity and restricting new ticket sales. As the months went on Disney slowly increased park capacity from 25% to 35% and allowed limited new ticket sales. However, Disney has yet to resume the sale of new annual passes. Currently only existing passholders can renew their passes.

Previously Disney has said they are planning on allowing the sale of new passes, but have yet to give a date when that will happen. Even though Disneyland has cancelled all annual passes last week and has yet to announce how the new version of park passes will look like, Walt Disney World is still planning on keeping its program.

“The Walt Disney World Annual Passholder program remains in place, and we appreciate the continued loyalty and dedication of our current Passholders,” Disney spokeswoman Erica Ettori said in a statement to The Orlando Sentinel.

According to the newspaper, “it could be months, possibly early 2022, before new passes go on sale again.” This would be Disney’s way of controlling crowds as Disney heads into its 50th anniversary celebration this October.

“It would be foolish for them to introduce it in just a couple of months when this event is happening,” said Rick Munarriz, a Florida analyst at The Motley Fool who follows the attractions industry. “At the end of the day, Disney has to look out for the number of people that it’s regulating into its parks right now. It is a bit of a supply and demand issue.”

According to Orlando Sentinel reporter Gabrielle Russon, Munarriz said that the annual passes are not “in jeopardy” as was the case at Disneyland. “There’s probably more passholders in Disneyland than there is in Disney World,” Munarriz said. “Disney will need its Disney World passholders more than Disneyland passholders in the near future.”

The Motley Fool analyst said if Disney begins selling new annual passes before 2022, they will either have limited park availability or be extremely expensive.

“I don’t think that they’re going to offer the traditional 365 days-a-year, open-access to the parks unless it’s at a very high price, or it’s … very, very, very restrictive,” Munarriz said.
