Walt Disney World and Disneyland testing mobile checkout at retail locations

The novel coronavirus pandemic ushered in a whole new way people interact within a Disney Theme Park. Some procedures will be temporary and some will become permanent. Although these features are new, many of them have been planned for the parks, such as the park reservation system, for quite sometime. The onset of the pandemic just accelerated their implementation.

This week another of those features have been introduced at Walt Disney World and Disneyland – merchandise mobile checkout. Apple and Amazon GO have been utilizing this cashier-less system for years now. Now the system is being tested at MouseGear at the EPCOT theme park and the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney.

Expanding the functionality of the My Disney Experience app, guests can simply scan any item in the store and once a Cast Member verifies the purchases, simply walk out.

Disney mobile checkout

Shoppers need to open up the Walt Disney World or Disneyland app, tap the plus (+) at the bottom then choose the “Shop in Store – Now Testing” option.

The next screen then details the process. As shoppers enter the store they will pick up a clear Disney Parks shopping bag specifically for mobile checkout, scan the items they wish to purchase, then hit “checkout” and pay for the items. Annual Passholder discounts will automatically be applied at checkout, however at this time Disney Visa cardmembers will still need to go to a register to checkout in order to receive any applicable discounts.

Shoppers will be issued a QR code, which they need to show to a Cast Member at one of the “mobile checkout” kiosks at the exit. Additionally, at the exit is paper to wrap any fragile items.

It is expected the system will be rolled out to other locations in the future.
