runDisney Springtime Surprise medals may not cross the finish line this year

As runners start arriving at Walt Disney World for the runDisney Springtime Surprise race this week, participants received an unexpended email regarding the medals.

“In advance of the weekend events, we wanted to share with you the unfortunate possibility that our event medals may not arrive from our supplier in time for the event, due to recent global supply chain challenges,” read the email to racers. “Although we have been working to resolve this matter, we cannot guarantee at this time the medals will be available at the finish line.”

Disney went on to say that if the medals do not arrive in time for the race they will “get the well-deserved medal(s) to those who participated in the event, in the most timely fashion possible.” They have asked each runner to confirm their mailing address so they can mail them their medals in the event they do not arrive.

Runners took to social media to express their disappointment. One Twitter user said, “The whole ‘may not arrive’ is probably a ‘will not arrive’ too” while another posted, “I try not to be disappointed in things but I am with the ‘supply chain issue’ with #rundisney this weekend. I do understand where I deal with it at work, but this was known months ago & there’s a lack of understanding of what it means to wear the medals in parks.” Others have said that this race would be their first race or the first one for someone they are running with and said this was “beyond disappointing.”

Others did not seem to have much sympathy including one saying “let the Karen comments begin” and others calling it “first-world problems.”

This week’s race weekend will include a runDisney Springtime Surprise Sunrise Yoga on Thursday, 31 March starting at 5:30 a.m. in front of Cinderella Castle in the Magic Kingdom, followed by the Expedition Everest 5K race starting at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, 1 April, the 10K Run for the Taste race starting at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, 2 April, and concluding with the 10-mile Twilight Zone Tower of Terror race, also starting at 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, 3 April.

For those who cannot make it to participate in this weekend’s runs, Disney is also offering virtual races for all three events. “Whether you run on your favorite local trail, jog around your neighborhood, or even set the pace on a treadmill, you’ll be part of the fun—and the magic of these virtual events!”
