“Fantasmic!” stage under extensive renovations, no return date announced

Last July, after being closed for four months due to the coronavirus pandemic, Walt Disney World reopened the park in phases. Even though most of the attractions, entertainment, resorts, shopping, and dining have reopened, some have not. One of those is “Fantasmic!”, the nighttime spectacular at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Many Disney bloggers speculated – erroneously in many cases – that the reason a particular show had yet to return was that Disney was gutting the entertainment division in order to save money. They were also saying the same things about “Fantasmic!” Apparently, this is not the case.

Recently aerial photos were posted from The Disney Pilot on Instagram and Bioreconstruct on Twitter about the extensive work being done to the show stage.

Last month, Bioreconstruct posted an image of the theatre showing the Maleficent dragon visible on stage and the steamboat, that Mickey and the entire cast appear on, stripped down to its frame.

Recently, Instagram user @thedisneypilot posted a birds-eye shot showing the progression of work on the theatre. It looks like there has been more work on the Steamboat Willie boat and the Maleficent dragon is back in its lair. In addition, work appears to be ongoing on the water screen plumbing.

A close-up look at the dragon show some interesting stage markings for the performers. Presumably, this is to keep the performers safe from the fire emitting from the dragon.
