For years guests were able to walk to the Magic Kingdom from Disney’s Contemporary Resort Hotel and from the Ticket & Transportation Center to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and then on to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, but that was as far as they could go.
Then in July 2019, Walt Disney World filed a permit with the state of Florida – “Grand Floridian to MK Walkway.” At the time, a Disney spokesperson said, “”The walking path from Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa will give our Walt Disney World Resort hotel guests another convenient way to reach Magic Kingdom Park.”

Although no official opening date has yet to be announced, a little over a year later, Disney seems close to completing the walkway. For years there has always been path from the Magic Kingdom heading towards Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, but it ended at the canal that is utilized by the Electrical Water Pageant. Many Disney fans were concerned this would spell the end for this popular nighttime water show that has been around since the resort’s opening. This fear was short-lived because not only does the Electrical Water Pageant utilize the canal to enter and exit the storage and maintenance facilities, but also Disney’s fleet of boats that navigate the Seven Seas Lagoon.

As construction commenced, it was apparent that a swing bridge was being built over the wide of the canal. As construction progressed retaining walls were built, pathways constructed, and finally landscaping.

“On the Magic Kingdom side, there’s still a decent bit of work left to do, including planting new shrubbery,” reports WDWNT.com. “But it seems the construction crews have been hard at work to make this project go quickly.”

“While visiting Magic Kingdom today, we noticed that work on the Grand Floridian walkway has progressed nicely since the theme parks reopened,” reports BlogMickey.” As you can see in the photos below, a walkway connects the path to the Magic Kingdom monorail station and a temperature check tent has been installed.” They continue, “Further down the walkway, both bridges are now installed and lighting installation appears to be the next step.”
This pathway is a welcomed addition to the resort. Not only does it give a scenic path for walkers and joggers, but more importantly it will help with congestion at the Ticket & Transportation Center and in particular the monorail for those guests looking to get to the Magic Kingdom before rope drop or departing the park after the evening’s fireworks show.
